Collectiva Gallery, Berlin
February 7 – March 28 2009
The exhibition “Forever Young” presents the latest works from current series “Action” and “Barber’s Shop”. In „Barber’s Shop“ Roman Tolici shows 40 paintings of famous persons in culture and politics of the 19th and 20th century, reflecting the “cumulative portrait” of the people and the “unmasked portrait“, while „Action“ thematizes the phenomenon of instability of an image and our process of perception.
In the series „Action“ the static image becomes a moving sequence throughtout his instability and suppleness. The kinetic effect serves nothing but our memory, while at the same time our eye is only the messenger. All these works depicts an early state of existence, not only because of the children presented, but also by pointing out the origins and development of our perception process.
Every title – „One Shadow“, „One Gate“, „One Summer“ – suggests the single form as well as the plural, the beginning as well as the end. By the interplay of light and darkness, fullness and emptiness, happiness and sadness the artist evolves a poetic story about the beauty of the world. The nostalgia of the loss of beauty is part of the beauty itself.
In both series Roman Tolici pursuits equalities, ambivalences and researches of the young and new visions of the world.
The exhibition is the first solo presentation of Roman Tolici’s works in Germany.
